Rumormill: GTbyCitroen could be built in limited numbers

The game car specs came in at 3,000 pounds and 782 horses, some of those powered by hydrogen. If a real car -- actually suggested to be a grand tourer by Citroen's press release -- were built, we hope they opt for a version of the Peugeot 908's diesel V12.

For 700 hp and 800 ft-lbs, we'd have no problem driving a car that looks like a catfish up front and a platypus out back. No matter what they put in it, expect it to be tres chere if it ever gets built.

So while it turns out that PSA is actually not looking to buy Honda's F1 team (that's why they call it the rumormill), the brand could have seriously sporting aspirations of a different sort.

According to Jean-Pierre Ploué, PSA's chief designer, there might be a 20-edition run of the GTbyCitroen, the car Citroen created for Sony's GT5.

Citroën C3 Picasso Showcases Second Generation Stop & Start

Citroën was the first manufacturer to introduce Stop & Start with combined alternator-starter on its C2 and C3 models, some four years ago. Independent testing proved it could give a 27% fuel saving in urban traffic by turning off the engine as the vehicle comes to a halt and then instantly restarting it as soon as the brake pedal is released.

Citroën is to launch a second generation of its pioneering Stop & Start technology. Previewed on a striking pearlescent white and orange C3 Picasso at the Paris motor show, the new micro-hybrid system will be introduced in 2010 and will be available on a range of petrol and diesel models.

The special show car offers even better economy than the standard model with almost 70mpg on the combined cycle as well as low CO2 emissions of just 110g/km thanks to the new Stop & Start technology and six-speed EGS (Electronic Gearbox System). When the new C3 Picasso is launched in 2009, diesel versions will be fitted with a Particulate Filter System and will meet the Company’s green ‘Airdream’ criteria.

The new-generation Stop & Start system will retain the combined alternator-starter unit, which provides quiet, smooth and almost instantaneous restarts, and will produce even better fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Improving the system’s environmental performance further, the new generation Stop & Start will also recover energy during braking and deceleration to recharge the vehicle’s battery without consuming fuel.

2010 Citroen Eyes DTM Debut

Citroen Sport boss Olivier Quesnel has hinted at a possible WRC withdrawal for his French team if things don’t improve drastically over at WRC. Quesnel was referring to the fact that he thinks WRC is not promoted as well as the DTM series, with which he was extremely impressed.

"I went to Hockenheim,” he said, “to look at the DTM race and the promotion of that series is on another planet compared to the WRC.
"Citroen gave me the budget and I have to use it in the best possible way. We have a new car, the C5, which is in the market with the Audi A4 and the Mercedes C-class, so we have to look at things."

Quesnel reckons DTM gives automakers much better value for money than WRC as far as marketing and selling their cars goes. Beyond 2009 the Citroen participation in WRC is up in the air. Quesnel may have a point. Motorsports that are promoted much better than others include F1, NASCAR and DTM, as well as Dakar Series and Le Mans. WRC is seen as a sort of paradox; a series where lots of off-road driving takes place, and yet vehicles used are not off-road SUVs, with the result that often customers get confused by saloon 4WD cars that they themselves can’t drive on the same tracks as the likes of Sebastian Loeb.

Speaking of Loeb, Citroen has to consider the career of their ultra-successful driver, whose contract is up at the end of the 2009 season.

"If we are quite sure the WRC is a good idea then we can make the investment in the new car," said Quesnel. "But we are not here to race for the sake of the race. We are here to sell cars.
"I was happy to be in Jordan, but where were the spectators? We don't sell enough cars there - we need to be in China. If there is no promotion in WRC, it doesn't matter that the costs are becoming less and less."

The winner of the Citroen C-Design competition

Based on the design brief of using Citroën vehicle parts to design an object intended for everyday use, Ognyan Bozhilov from Bulgaria, took the grand prize of €10,000. Consisting of a C4 Picasso’s rear seat, C3 steering wheel, C3 Pluriel’s roof pillars and the spoiler from a C4 Coupe, Bozhilov's created a stylish snow sled which he named the Citroen Sledge.

With thousands of submissions which included a door handle as a telephone, a staircase constructed from rear spoilers and a seat made from the bonnet of a C1 city car, the judges settled on Bozhilov's design for its visual impact and functionality – qualities which reflect Citroën’s own design ethic.

Check out other clever submissions in the attached photos.

SPECULATIONS: New Citroen C4

Autojournal, the French publication, is betting that this picture above is an accurate depiction of the next Citroen C4, a car due out in 2010. The jury is still out on whether it really is the C4, but we like what we see in general. C4 has been a good success since its launch and although not directly troubling cars like the Golf and Focus, it provides a viable alternative for those looking at quirky styling and interesting interior design aspects of a car.

Next C4 will have versions such as a 3 door and 5 door like the current model, as well as station wagon, coupe cabriolet and Sportlounge which is inspired by the stunning concept of the same name. A hybrid engine could be on the offering to add to the usual petrol and diesel options.
